Statement
I am interested in still life painting. Using a few common objects,
I invite the viewer into a world of my own creation. This world
is condensed, classical, geometric, and ordered, offering a respite
from the fast-forward pace of contemporary life. I search for textures,
layered to suggest the weathering of time. I explore the nuances
of space between and around objects. I focus light and shadow to
carve out and define space. I like quiet moods and subtle colors
without names. I want these simple objects to exist in my paintings
more beautifully than they do in life. A goal, perhaps unachievable.
Studying Art History, I have followed still life as a thread, woven
throughout centuries of painting. My guides have been Zurbaran,
Thiebaud, Bravo, Caravagio and many, many others who have delighted
in the painting of still life. Each artist has made ordinary objects
sublime.
