Terms, Fees and the Process
"The representation of a
person in a portrait is a
collaboration between artist and
client. I strive
to depict the subject as
they see themselves and as they wish
to be seen..."
GENERAL
All portraits are painted
exclusively by Sheila McGraw, in
oils or mixed media on canvas or
linen. Only high quality paints,
mediums, canvas and linen are used.
The support is stretched on gallery
stretchers and primed with the
appropriate, acid-free,
archival ground to facilitate museum
quality results. Paintings are
varnished after approval.
FEES
Each portrait is quoted
individually. Please contact the
gallery for pricing.
PROCESS
The initial consultation takes place
between artist and client,
preferably at the location that the
final painting will hang. The
overall concept of the painting will
be discussed as well as size of the
canvas, pose, clothing and degree of
formality. The artist will take
snapshots of the location and a few
of the subject for general
reference. A price will be quoted at
this time.
When the client decides to proceed
with the portrait, a deposit of 60%
of the final price and a signed
commission agreement are due. Work
will not commence until the deposit
and agreement are finalized. A
deposit of $1000. will hold the
subject's place (and price) in the
queue.
Before the second meeting Sheila
McGraw will present one or two rough
sketch either in person, or by fax
or email, for consultation. A date
and time will be arranged to set up
and shoot a photography session.
This session takes approximately
two-to-four hours. If the client can
dedicate more time, Ms. McGraw will
sketch the client for further
reference. Within two weeks of the
photo session a sketch will be
presented to the client for
consultation. Upon approval of the
composition Ms. McGraw will proceed
with the painting.
COMPLETION
Times for completion can vary,
although the artist expects a
turnaround time of approximately
sixteen weeks. Upon completion, the
balance remaining will be due.
Portraits are unframed. Crating,
shipping and insurance, any state or
other applicable tax, and the
artist’s travel and accommodation
are extra.
